EST1091 Blog post 1: Bioprinting

Bioprinting is additive manufacturing process where biomaterials such as cells and growth factors are combined to create tissue-like structures that imitate natural tissues and it is very promising for use in medicine. Bioprinting applications include testing drugs , treating injuries and it may even cure people waiting for new hearts, livers, and other organs.

3D printing can be used not only in daily life, but also in medical aspects. It can use similar biological materials to make human tissues to help patients in need of organ transplants.

The first bioprinter was made by Professor Makoto Nakamura in 2008. It was used to create “biotubing” that worked like a blood vessel.By 2014, a California company, Organovo was printing human livers tissue for use in drug testing.

One of the big goals of bioprinting technology is to create body parts such as bones and organs. Additionally, bioprinting may one day be able to biopriting will become smarter and universal in futrue ,that Can be used in the automobile manufacturing industry. When scientists are able to do this, such an advance would be a game changer, saving millions of lives.
